The State Fair

Yesterday we took the boys to the State Fair. They had a lot of fun. I think we picked a pretty good day to go. There was a chance of rain in the forecast, which I think kept it from getting very crowded. It also kept it from getting hot. It was a little on the cool side, but not bad with sweatshirts on. It didn't end up raining at all while we were there. Most of the kiddie rides had a 36 inch height requirement. Matty is about 39 inches, so he was able to go on a lot of rides, but Eric is only about 31 inches so he could only go on with a parent. First Matty rode on a little bug ride- he was excited to go on it, but once it started he got a funny look on his face like he might be feeling queasy. I think it was just the cold wind blowing in his face though- he said he didn't feel sick, and that he liked the ride.Next Eric saw a train ride so I went on that one with them. He loved it. He was saying "Choo-Choo!" the whole time. When we got off he said "bye bye tain! Love you tain!".
Then Matty wanted to ride a roller coaster and so we went over to the Dragon Wagon. They had changed their height restrictions to 30" or taller, so that meant Eric could go on it without Mike or I. We asked him if he wanted to, and he said yes. But as soon as it started going, he started wailing. He did not like it. I think it went a little too fast for him and it was pretty loud. It was funny to watch- Matty was really enjoying it and laughing his head off, while Eric was sitting right next to him screaming and crying. I felt so bad for my little guy. Although when he got off, I asked him if he liked it and he said yes. After that we decided to give Eric a break from rides, so we went over to the PBS Kids play area and let them run around for a while. This is Matty with Wyatt from one of his favorite cartoons Super Why.
Matty had been asking all week if we could get some cotton candy at the fair, so we couldn't disappoint him. We went and bought a big bag of it and shared it. I don't think Eric had ever had any before. When Mike held the bag out to him, he reached in and grabbed some, but then just looked at it like "you don't really eat this, do you?". So I put it up to his lips and he kinda licked it and then started eating it. He never got through his first handful though. A little bit of sweets goes a very long way for him.
Matty, on the other hand, couldn't get enough of it. He was in heaven.
Eric still wasn't very interested in rides, so we let Matty pick the next one. He picked Dizzy Dragons, which is kinda like the Teacups. He wanted Michael to go on it with him. They got it spinning pretty good and Matty loved it.
We convinced Eric that the Merry-go-Round was harmless enough and all 4 of us went on that one next. Eric almost cried on that one too... but it was when it stopped and we tried to take him off the horse. I think he had fun!We had just enough tickets left for Matty to go on one more ride. He picked this hot air balloon one. It not only went in circles, but went pretty high up in the air. He had a huge smile the whole time, and when he got off he said "Mommy! I went up high and it made a lot of more oxygen go into my heart! It was so cool!".
Matty had really been wanting to play a game, so we let him do a fishing game once before we left. He caught one fish and won a little stuffed hamburger. We let Eric have a turn too and he won a little stuffed hot dog. Just what we always wanted! On our way out we stopped at the FFA Children's Barnyard and the boys got to look at pigs, geese, goats, baby chicks, bunnies and sheep.
In Matty's preschool class they have a class teddy bear named Rainbow. Each kid gets to take a turn taking care of Rainbow for a week and then writing about what they did with him. This is Matty's week, so we took Rainbow to the fair with us. Matty thought it would be good to take a picture of Rainbow in front of these sculptures because they are colorful just like him.
The day we went to the fair also happened to be Michael's birthday. I'm pretty sure going on kiddie rides at the state fair wasn't his ideal birthday, but he was a very good sport about it. We left the fair around lunchtime and went and got him a steak at O'Charley's, which was a lot more in line with what he likes to do on his birthday!
